Our Horses.

Charleston Carriage Works employs a mixture of Belgian and Percheron heavy draft horses. Descended from the same majestic animals that worked on farms and in cities through the centuries, our horses are truly magnificent, and we treat them with the love and care they deserve. Horse-drawn carriages have been on Charleston’s streets since the late 1600’s, and we are proud to carry on that tradition. It is an absolute pleasure for all of us to work side by side with our horses, and we enjoy sharing that experience with you during each of our carriage tours.

A horse is the projection of peoples’ dreams about themselves—strong, powerful, beautiful—and it has the capability of giving us escape from our mundane existence.
-Pam Brown, Australian Poet

Each of our horses enjoys regularly scheduled time off, vacations at our farm on Johns Island, and great attention under our unsurpassed level of care.

Big John

Big John is the sweetest horse you’ll ever meet and the favorite of many drivers.  You would never guess his age by watching him work!  Although he loves to be downtown (and King of Pops popsicles), Big John is semi-retired and spends the majority of his time out at the farm (keeping order).

Age: 21
Gender: Male
Weight: 1,900 lbs

Chief

Driving Chief is like driving a strawberry roan Cadillac.  He is not a big fan of the farrier and likes everything to be exactly where it was the last time he saw it!  You can always count on Chief for a good show when turned out at the farm where he likes to dig for buried treasure.

Age: 18
Gender: Male
Weight: 1,800 lbs

Dale

Dale is one of the few horses we’ve ever met that will actually come to you when you call him!  Dale has been giving carriage tours since he was 4 years old and is a pro.  He prefers slow moving mornings and being petted on his neck instead of the tip of his nose (he’ll let you know that, too).

Age: 12
Gender: Male
Weight: 2,050 lbs

Don

Don is one of our largest horses, with a beautiful wide blaze and a little black spot right in the middle of his top lip, he’s easy to recognize around town.  He is fascinated with water and the way it moves through his body and keeps the stablehands busy on his days off.  His favorite letter is “P”.

Age: 10
Gender: Male
Weight: 2,100 lbs

Gary

People love Gary because of his wavy blond hair and laid back attitude.  If he was a person he would surely be a surfer.  You can pet his face for hours and he only likes carrots and apples for treats.  His favorite things are having his legs groomed and tipping over the water bucket inside the stable.

Age: 9
Gender: Male
Weight: 2,000 lbs

Jake

Our most serious horse, Jake is very stoic, matter-of-fact, and easy to get along with.  What he lacks in size compared to our largest horses he more than makes up for in determination and diligence.  He really enjoys rolling in the dirt at the farm and we think he might be studying to be an accountant.

Age: 14
Gender: Male
Weight: 1,800 lbs

Luke

It seems that Luke would rather be around people than other horses.  He loves his grooming sessions, especially with hard-bristle brushes and especially at the end of the day.  He has a baby face and really enjoys working downtown when it’s busy and there are lots of things to look at.

Age: 9
Gender: Male
Weight: 1,975 lbs

Maverick

Maverick is very similar in color to Chief and it can be hard to tell them apart from a distance.  He is very proud and showy, and likes to be in charge out at the farm.  It’s not uncommon for him to meet you at the gate and he’ll do just about anything for an apple wafer.

Age: 11
Gender: Male
Weight: 1,900 lbs

Moses

Moses is the largest horse in our herd and he is also one of the most gentle.  He’s very attentive and loves to see and be involved in whatever it is you’re doing, even if it has nothing to do with him and even if he gets in the way.  He gives the best horse hugs in the group and is a lot of fun to just hang out with.

Age: 9
Gender: Male
Weight: 2,250 lbs

Rob

At over 19 hands high, Rob is our tallest horse and one of our most handsome – and he knows it.  He thinks our stable is his day spa.   He starts every day wondering what we can do for him.  He likes having his face washed and being clipped.  He wants all of his hair in exactly the right place before leaving the barn in the morning.

Age: 11
Gender: Male
Weight: 1,950 lbs

Trevor

Trevor is the only chestnut Belgian in our herd.  His color is absolutely beautiful.  He has a long stride and you can tell he loves to work.  Clever and somewhat mischievous, it is not uncommon to continually have to fetch boards, brooms, cups etc. that he pulls into his stall on his days off.
